Thank you very much for the reply. I've had a similar experience to mckinnley. There is an external switch and it's on. But I've typed in iwconfig and sudo iwlist scanning with the same results as mckinnley. But I think I am missing the first steps of even installing a driver because my wired ethernet port is physically broken. I was hoping there was a way I could download the packages with windows, and then transfer them to ubuntu and install it manually. Thank you for any advice.

Sorry for the double post. I've extracted the tar file for the madwifi driver but I need a little bit of guidance on how to install it. I have tried typing 'make' and the directory starting with '/home....' (sorry can't remember the exact directory). The tar is extracted to the desktop. But it says it can't find make. I tried this because it says, in the install readme in the tar, to type 'make' in the top directory of the tar. I'm just not totally sure what 'top directory' means, or the exact command I need, or if I'm typing the right command for the directory. Thanks for any help.
